Something terrible happened to me last night. This is a dog bite. It was playfully provoked, something I could have avoided with a little bit more cautiousness.

IF YOU OWN AN ANIMAL, YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT IT HAS UP TO DATE SHOTS. IF YOU’RE HANDLING AN ANIMAL, EVEN ONE YOU’VE KNOWN FOR YEARS, YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS CAN HAPPEN AT ANY MOMENT, COMPLETELY UNEXPECTEDLY. There is no way to predict if your animal will or will not behave a certain way.

Luckily the owner of this dog did give him rabies vaccinations. But that is no guarantee that the virus couldn’t have been transmitted. Once symptoms develop survival rate becomes rather low. I am confident that I am safe and healthy, but prepared to take urgency if needed.

I know lots of pet owners who do not take the ownership of their pets seriously, and completely skip some of the basic requirements to keeping their pet. Good thing this owner didn’t leave them by the wayside. It’s not just a matter of preference, it’s a legal matter, and it can be a matter of life or death, simply put.

You can clearly see, rabies or not, if the dog had bitten a half an inch closer to the center of my face, I’d be blind. The cut on my nose didn’t just scratch, but seems to have penetrated the flesh to the inside of my nostril. There is a cut on my septum, either from the tooth that penetrated my nose or perhaps it’s a different cut from a different tooth. Came close to striking the bridge of my nose, which would have broken it for sure. If the dog had not just snapped and gotten caught, or latched, I would be missing my nose and my cheek and my vision impaired, if not blinded.

So take my advice, and don’t screw around when it comes to your pet(s), as the consequences could gravely outweigh any personal satisfaction brought by your companion, and putting that above the safety of others, yourself, and your own pet, is extremely selfish.
